To be the center for debate and thought leadership on the future of sea power, maritime security, and national defense.

Founded in 1873, the U.S. Naval Institute is the independent forum for those who dare to read, think, speak, and write in order to advance the professional, literary, and scientific understanding of sea power and other issues critical to global security. Your membership ensures that the Naval Institute carries on its vital mission as The Independent Forum of the Sea Services–a place where free and independent debate may flourish.

The Naval Institute shall remain:

  • Independent - A non-profit member association, with no government support, that does not lobby for special interests;
  • Non-Partisan - An independent, professional military association with a mission, goals, and objectives that transcend political affiliations;
  • Innovative - Ideas and debate flourish through its respected journals, Proceedings and Naval History, its conferences, its books and its online content, in support of those who serve.
